FIFTH SCORPENE SUBMARINE MDL YARD 11879 (VAGIR) LAUNCHED AT MAZAGON DOCKS, MUMBAI*
Scorpene Submarine Ins kalvari Launched at Mumbai. Yard 11879, the fifth of the Indian Navy’s Kalvari class submarines of Project 75 has been launched today, 12 Nov 20, at the Kanhoji Angre Wet Basin of Mazagon Dock Limited (MDL). Shri Shripad Yesso Naik, Hon’ble RRM was the Chief Guest at the ceremony and the submarine was named ‘Vagir’ in accordance with the Naval traditions by Mrs Vijaya Shripad Naik.
The ceremony was undertaken via Video Conferencing between MDL at Mumbai and with the Chief Guest conducting the launch by remote from Goa. The ceremony was also attended by senior naval officers and dignitaries both from Integrated Headquarters Ministry of Defence (Navy), Headquarters Western Naval Command and officials from Naval Group, France. Scorpene Submarine Ins kalvari The Scorpene submarines, designed by the French Naval Group (Formerly DCNS), are being built by Mazagon Dock Limited (MDL) in Mumbai as part of Project-75 of the Indian Navy. The first Kalvari, commissioned on December 8, 1967, was also the first submarine of the Indian Navy. It was decommissioned on May 31, 1996, after nearly three decades of service. Karanj is the third of the six Scorpene-class submarines built by MDL under the Project 75 programme.
The first two submarines of the Project-75 have been commissioned into the Navy and the third and fourth submarines are progressing their Sea Trials. After its launch today, Vagir will commence with the setting to work of various equipment and the Harbour Acceptance Trials. The crew will subsequently sail the submarine for the Sea Acceptance Trials after which the submarine would be delivered to the Navy. The Factshala Exclusive.
